Hélène Bellenger is a French artist whose work explores the production and circulation of images within Western visual culture. Through photography, installation and image collecting, she examines the aesthetic and social norms that shape our perception. Taking a sculptural approach to photography, she reworks existing images and materials to reveal their political, cultural and material dimensions.
Initiated in 2021, Bianco Ordinario takes the marble quarries of Carrara, Italy, as its starting point, exploring the intensive extraction of marble, which is processed into powder and used in everyday consumer products. Hélène Bellenger prints images onto the cardboard backs of packaging from products containing marble powder, bringing the luxurious imagery associated with marble into dialogue with the fragile and ephemeral nature of industrial objects. The series examines the connections between consumerism, visual culture and the construction of norms of whiteness in Western societies.
A graduate of the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, Hélène Bellenger has exhibited her work at institutions including the MUCEM in Marseille and the Hangar Photo Art Center in Brussels. Her work has received the Eurazeo Young Photography Prize and the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Prize for Young Talents.
